How do I decide between learning to knit or learning to crochet?
These are really good questions and two I often get asked. Knitting and crochet are great skills and each have there advantages and disadvantages so if you are unsure of which to try, I would recommend you consider the following;#
1. Why do you want to learn this new skill?
Do you want to learn this new skill because there is something specific you want to make in the future or is it because you want to just learn something new as a way to relax and find some mindfulness? Knitting is a great way to create a wearable fabric with structure, crochet is arguable more creative and less constraining. You can create beautiful thicker/textured fabrics which can be used for multiple things including blankets and bags.
My vote: Crochet - you don't need a plan, you can just wing it and enjoy the process.
2. How quick do you want to learn the skill?
Crochet is seen as a more accessible skill to learn as it requires less tools and is less stressful as you are only working with one stitch at a time whereas with knitting you are holding all of the stitches on two needles and work each one in rows. Knitting is a much slower craft and it can take time for you to see your progress whereas crochet is much quicker which can help to build your confidence faster.
My vote: Crochet for quick learning, knitting for mindfulness
How much will it cost to learn?
You can purchase good quality tools for both crafts and the materials needed are used for both so the argument here isn't a strong one. Crochet hooks are cheaper as they are smaller and you only need one but it would be a shame to not try a skill because of a potential £1 difference in price. My vote: Knitting, you can get the most beautiful knitting tools for reasonable prices
So those are my little food for thoughts regarding whether you should learn to knit or crochet BUT I have one piece of advice to give you. Try both, start with crochet to build your confidence and dexterity but then give knitting a go. You can create the most beautiful pieces of clothing and accessories such as scarves, shawls or even a bobbly beanie. So try both and get crafty!
Happy crafting
