This is a great question and one that I get asked a lot and unfortunately, it does not have a straight answer....
It 100% depends on what yarn you are learning to knit with. Each yarn weight (weight is another term for type when it comes to yarn, the weight of yarn relates to it's thickness) has a reccomended needle size so that you knit a beautiful and comfortable fabric.
If you are starting your knitting journey, it also depends on what the pattern is asking you to knit with.
So to help you, below is a list of yarn weights and the needles that they are suitable to knit with:
Light / Sport (5-Ply), Suggested Needle Size: 3.75–4.5 mm
DK / Double Knit (8-Ply), Suggested Needle Size: 4.0–4.5 mm
Worsted / Aran (10-Ply), Suggested Needle Size: 4.5–5.5 mm
Bulky / Chunky (12-Ply), Suggested Needle Size: 5.5–8.0 mm
Now if you haven't started your knitting journey yet because you don't know where or how to start, keep reading. I would highly recommend starting your knitting journey with double knit yarn and 4mm knitting needles, this is because most patterns that are suitable for beginners use double knit yarn and 4mm needles so you will be starting strong. Also, double knit yarn is a very common yarn to use for most patterns/projects so if you can work with this, everything else will come with ease!
I hope you found that helpful and as always, happy knitting!
